Secondary preparation

Preparing for secondary school in Grades 4 and 5

First check whether the target school requires an exam. Then plan reading, mathematics and study strategies around your child’s grade. Check each school’s application process and deadlines separately.

Check the school’s requirements

Québec’s government explains that private schools set their own admission procedures and families should contact the school directly. Do not assume every school uses the same entrance exam or that a tutoring timetable is an admissions calendar.

  • Record the school name, official admissions page and contact.
  • Check application deadlines, whether an exam is required and the documents requested.
  • Update the preparation plan when the school changes its requirements.

Grade 4: build a method

TAC’s Grade 4 preparation focuses on reading comprehension, mathematical reasoning and study strategies. Notice whether your child can understand a question, explain a solution and check an answer; use those observations to discuss the support needed.

Grade 5: focus the review

TAC’s Grade 5 intensive course combines reading and math review, error analysis and time management. A useful starting point is to identify recurring difficulties: understanding the question, carrying out calculations or organizing the solution.

Three things to prepare

  • Your child’s current grade and target schools.
  • One or two learning areas that need the most support.
  • Time available for classes and practice; confirm sessions, teaching language and fees with the school.
